The greatest greatest hits album of 2008
Posted at 12:29 PM, 17 August 2008 - 2 Comments

Saint Etienne's new single premiered on BBC London radio on August 6th. "Burnt Out Car 2008" is a version re-remixed by Xenomania, which doesn't sound too dissimilar from the old Balearico remix. It was featured last Thursday on Popjustice as "song of the day" with a 30-second clip and a small write-up:

«This is an old song made to sound like a new song by Xenomania, although when we say 'new' we should point out that it does have a STRONG scent of 1998 about it.

No worry, however, because 'Burnt Out Car' is a jolly little number and will launch Saint Etienne's newest Greatest Hits compilation with 'great aplomb'.»

Last Monday Popjustice dubbed Saint Etienne's new compilation as "the greatest greatest hits album of 2008", with a picture of the CD out on a rooftop in London (stars above it, cars below it, etc.): "You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll have a little dance. What else could you want in a pop album?".

London Conversations: The Best of Saint Etienne is due out in the UK on September 29. It will be available in a single-disc condensed format, a double album and a 2CD+DVD boxed set with all of their music videos and a book-shaped package which contains exclusive artwork and sleeve notes by journalist Jon Savage.

Two new singles are set to be released from the compilation. The first of those, coming out on September 8th on CD and vinyl formats, is an update of "Burnt Out Car" produced by Xenomania (the 7'' vinyl is now available for pre-order). The second will be "This Is Tomorrow", a collaboration with Annie and Richard X.

"Burnt Out Car" is Saint Etienne's new single
Posted at 3:37 PM, 23 July 2008 - 5 Comments

Saint Etienne have revealed on the band's newsletter that their new single will in fact be a Xenomania-produced re-make of "Burnt Out Car". The single will precede the release of London Conversations: The Best Of Saint Etienne.

"Burnt Out Car" first appeared in 1996 as a remix version produced by Balearico (a.k.a. Brian Higgins and Matt Gray). Earlier this year, Sarah Cracknell told Popjustice that the song should have been reworked and put out as a single: "(...) there is a track that could benefit from a certain something but mainly because it never came out properly. It's a track called 'Burnt Out Car' which we recorded with Brian Higgins of Xenomania fame. It's just really good and should have been a single and given more of a chance in life."

"Burnt Out Car 2008" is now set for an early September release on CD-S and 7'' vinyl. The single package will include a remix by Mark Brown ("Balearic mix", available on CD2) and three new b-sides: "River" on the 7", "Destroy The Building" and "Night Vision" on CD1.

September will also see the release of Saint Etienne's new compilation entitled London Conversations. It will come in three different editions:
-- a condensed, standard 18-track greatest hits;
-- a 2-disc set which will include "Lover Plays The Bass" and "This Is Tomorrow" (a new song co-written with Annie and produced by Richard X);
-- a 3-disc set in a book cover with a DVD of Saint Etienne's videos.

What pop music is all about this year

On a recent article about Annie's new album, Richard X speaks about her collaboration with Xenomania: "Annie is a genuine pop lover, so it's easy to try out new ideas and try and push it a bit. I was glad to hear that she'd hooked up with Xenomania and it's really exciting, completely no-holds-barred stuff and exactly what pop music is all about this year."

Annie also talks about meeting Brian Higgins: "He said, `I've been looking for the person who wrote Heartbeat'. I said: "look no further'". Three weeks later, last summer, recording began. Higgins worked with Annie on the entire album's direction and secured a new deal with Island Records.

Annie's MySpace is streaming new clips of the Xenomania-produced "My Love Is Better" and the Richard X-produced "Songs Remind Me You" (which was yesterday's song of the day in Popjustice).
